I started building my first website about five years ago. As a newbie then I knew absolutely nothing except how to turn on my computer.
After a few failed attempts trying a few different web hosts I discovered a great website hosting company that makes building a website really easy. (If you can fill in a online order form, then you can build a website with this service!)
It is the perfect company for newbies since it is a site building program and web host all in one. They teach you how to build a website that will be found by the search engines in the easiest way possible. For example, you basically fill in the blocks: Put the name of your web page here, Add your description in this block, Add your text of the content for the web page here, insert graphics/links or other web page options.
This site building program also analyzes your pages for you to be sure that it will be found and ranked by the search engines. What is also nice is that it is a great company that focuses on SEO optimization as well as eCommerce. I really like earning the extra money my website brings in!
I also like that they have a wonderful array of features that are all included in the reasonable monthly fee like a keyword selection tool, a blog, newsletter, auto responder, forum, statistics, etc. Here is how I got started and you can also watch a video about this site building program here:
http://www.web-site-building-tips.com/how-to-make-a-website.html
They also automatically create a site map and submit your website to all the major search engines after analyzing each web page to be sure that they are properly optimized. (That will save you many headaches and is a huge time saver!)
No matter what site building program and web host you select, it is helpful to read this website building guide which is a step-by-step resource that I still find helpful. It’s free too:

Have fun!
… and good luck!
Office Live Small Business from Microsoft is one you should explore. It is template based, meaning you don’t have to know HTML, yet it still gives you plenty of control over the look and feel of your website. Once you build it, there is a great online community that offers SEO (search engine optimization) tips so that your website isn’t just Google friendly, but also Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com etc friendly.
Cheers,
Jeff
